Contrary to popular belief, hair doesn’t grow back darker and thicker after shaving. We generally have the impression that it does because re-growing hair still has its original color and is not yet bleached by the sun or by the frequent use of water and soap. Hair re-growth after waxing, plucking or with the use of an epilator will have a tapered tip making it feel and look finer than the ones that have flat tip due to shaving.
But after knowing all those factual tidbits about hair, I still opt to have my legs and underarm hair removed through epilation (removing hair from the roots) not because of the “thicker and darker” re-growth but because my legs’ re-growth tends to create tiny bumps on my legs that are very itchy, irritating and unattractive! Knowing me and how I can’t resist scratching insect bites, those bumps may as well be scratch marks. :/
After an intensive research on epiltors and reading a great deal of raves about a specific brand, I was convinced that Braun was the best one yet. So I immediately asked my mama, who’s currently in Dubai, to order me this specific brand and model online thru a site called shafqa.com. It was on sale that time but she still had to pay for the shipping. Anyway, she bought this for AED 150 (less than Php 1700) which is not bad considering how much I need this. I’m pretty sure this will be used until it decides to give up on me. And compared to the prices at regular waxing salons, this is a steal! This is actually mama’s Christmas gift for me (ordered it early December) but only received it this month through her office mate who went home for the holidays. 🙂
Braun is not available locally but you can always try Philips’ epilators – they’re usually available at Watson’s and other leading department stores for almost the price range.

In a nutshell, an epilator is used like a razor wherein you just run it through your legs a couple of times until no hair is left but works like a wax as it removes hair including the roots and not just cutting them.
It can’t be any clearer than that but if you like a more graphic description of how it works, here it is: so basically the epilator head has tiny SoftLift tips that lifts the hair to an almost 90 degree angle. From here, the tweezer-like metals grab the hair and pull it from their roots. Don’t turn away just yet! This only causes very minimal pain – I even tried an experiment for this.
I’e been waxing since high school so I already have high tolerance for pain when it comes to hair removal methods but my little sister never tried waxing – not even once in her life – so I tried it on her to know if it would hurt her. And I’m glad to announce that the only response I got while I remove the hair on her right leg was that it was ticklish and an occasional “ouch”. Therefore, I’d say that the pain in is very tolerable even to beginners like her. 🙂
Not only is an epilator easy to use but it’s also easier to clean. I mean, no hours of drying or so. To clean it, just unplug the device and then squeeze the white button on each sides. This will release the epilator head. Using the white plastic brush that is included in the kit, turn the barrel on the epilator head around manually while brushing off the hair. Once the hairs are gone, dip the brush into alcohol and then run it through the barrel a couple of times. And that’s it!
|Sensitive Area/Underarm Cap|
This head is used for smaller areas and those with looser skin like the underarm and the bikini area.
Attaching this to the epilator head is optional. Its purpose is actually to alleviate pain during hair removal by, as the name suggests, massaging the area. Also, I personally like using this because it maintains a safe distance between the tweezer elements and the skin. Don’t worry though, even with close contact, it won’t cut you. 🙂
Leg done in less than 5 minutes!
|This is my lil sister’s legs, by the way. 🙂|
Begin with clean, dry and free from any products, Run your hands through your skin going to the opposite direction of hair growth to lift the short hairs (optimal hair length for epilation is 2-5mm). This gives the epilator a better grip on them. Then run the epilator in an upward motion – against the direction of hair growth. If needed, you can also change the epilation direction to ensure an even smoother finish. I usually just go back and forth until I’m completely hairless. 😀
TIP: Regular use of a massage sponge or a body scrubs will help prevent in-growing of small hairs. By doing so, you remove the thin skin that encloses or hinders the hair from growing out. Thus, creating a tiny budge on the skin’s surface.
Hands down, this is by far the most efficient way to remove leg hair. However, I DON’T recommend using an epilator when removing armpit hair. The underarm area is the most difficult place to remove hair from because at a joint the skin is incredibly supple and loose, allowing it to move with the epilator. This makes it super painful! I’ll stick with Strip It! Sugar Wax for my underarm hair removal, thank you. 🙂
This is definitely one for my most favorite beauty tools/devices as of the moment.
Hair removal can’t get any easier than this. 🙂
Oh by the way, thank you, Jannah, for letting me know about epilators! :*
