The purpose of a makeup primer is generally no different from paint primers as they both function as a primary layer of smoother coverage where paint/makeup would adhere better. And according to my basic workshop at Glaminar Makeup Artistry, makeup primer creates a barrier between the skin and the makeup to prevent the products from clogging our pores.
With the climate change we are currently experiencing, I would say that in our country, it’s almost summer-hot and humid all year round. So no, makeup primer is not optional for makeup users. It’s an essential to keep your makeup in place the entire day especially under the scorching hot sun.
So for my first real makeup primer, I decided to follow Ana‘s suggestion and got L’oreal Magic Perfecting Base Primer.  And she was right! This product is great considering that’s it’s a drugstore brand. This retails for Php 900+ at any L’oreal counters but I bought mine for Php 550 during a bazaar last summer. It was such a bargain that I didn’t really mind that the box is all tattered and everything. Don’t worry, this is 100% authentic. πŸ™‚

Forgive my below standard photo. This is actually an old photo.
The product itself is a pinkish white mousse that is easily blended with minimal effort. 15mL of product is contained in a heavy-duty glass jar with a black screw lid cap. I admit the glass jar makes it look expensive and classy but I’m not really fond of the packaging. It’s heavy and bulky but most of all, it’s unhygienic. I make sure you have a clean brush (preferable a pointed foundation brush) within reach when using this. I actually dedicated my Real Techniques pointed foundation brush from their Core Collection for this product alone.

When applied, my skin feels silky smooth in an instant! I just love how it glides right on my skin. It fills in pores and fine lines making foundation application fast and breezy. I guess it has something to do with its mousse-like consistency because it makes it perfect for filling in lines compared to liquid primers that would just slide right off the lines. Also, the pinkish white color helps neutralize and blur out the lines and imperfections. Thus, creating a smoother and slightly lighter canvass before makeup application.

As for makeup longevity, L’oreal Magic Perfecting Base Primer truly lived up to my expectations. It managed to keep my makeup intact throughout the day despite the humidity and all the sweat from my commute. That was probably roughly around 10 hours straight. It did minimize oiliness but not really kept them at bay entirely. I still had to retouch my powder once but you can still see that the makeup I applied before leaving the house is still there.
I would recommend this to makeup junkies who wants to keep their makeup in place for hours but is in a tight budget. But if you’re really really oily, I don’t think this would be the right one for you as it doesn’t really block oiliness. I read that Smashbox Photo Finish Primer is better but it’s definitely more expensive. You know what my primer purchase would be. *wink
